The difficulty lies in several factors, cooler temps means CAIRNS lawns require less WATER. Too much watering will cause many problems including pests, fungi and root rot issues.   However even though it’s cooler and the less water is needed it is usually very dry at the same time. Couple that with an occasional overly warm weather front and you can easily go the other way, and have your lawn suddenly dry out. Careful attention to correct WATERING amounts for the weather conditions and soil moisture content will be essential to get right for a healthy winter lawn. tO TEST YOUR LAWNS MOISTURE LEVELS SIMPLY TAKE A SCREW DRIVER AND POKE IT 2 TO 3 INCHES INTO THE LAWN AND CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY MOISTURE. Most lawns suffer from a few weeds every now and again, but sometimes the weeds just seem to take over and it looks like there are more weeds than lawn! Let’s take a look at why weeds grow in your lawn and how to get rid of them to give your lawn a much needed burst of health.
Why do weeds grow in your lawn?

Weeds tend to be opportunistic, growing where the conditions are right. They are extremely hardy and even if you think that you have removed the roots, they can pop up again very quickly. Many weeds blow in with the wind and even when you have removed all the weeds in your lawn, seeds can blow in from your neighbour’s property and the problem begins again.

Keeping your lawn healthy

All of this means that removing weeds is an ongoing process, but you can ‘weed proof’ your lawn to a certain degree by keeping your lawn healthy with the following tips.
  • Crowd out the weeds by growing a thick dense lawn with no thin or bare patches.
  • Fertilise your lawn regularly to keep it growing well.
  • Raise your mower blades to leave the growth long, as this helps shade the soil and prevents weeds growing.
  • Avoid shallow root systems by watering deeply, as this leads to a healthier lawn.
  • Aerate your lawn every year to increase the circulation of air, water and nutrients into the soil.

Getting rid of weeds in your lawn

Whilst the best way to beat weeds is to have a healthy lawn, when weeds do take a hold, you need the right type of weed killer. Here are three of the most common weeds we see in Australian lawns and how to get rid of them.
  1. Dandelions: Whilst pretty, these are a weed and should be removed or they will take over your lawn. The easiest strategy is to use a spot spray herbicide, but because it’s non-selective you need to spray each dandelion individually. The alternative is to use a weedkiller that targets broadleaf weeds and won’t kill your grass, so you can spray large areas quickly.
  2. Nutgrass: The bane of gardeners everywhere, nutgrass can seem impossible to get rid of in lawns and will require multiple treatments with a weedkiller, such as Sempra, which won’t harm your lawn.
  3. Bindii: If you have an infestation of prickly Bindii, then use the same broadleaf weedkiller that you use to remove dandelions.

Take care with Buffalo grass lawns

Always check that any weedkiller is safe for Buffalo grass lawns, because many of them will kill Buffalo grass just as easily as they kill the weeds; you must buy a weedkiller that is specifically designed for Buffalo grass.

Most of us with a lawn know that it needs a certain amount of care and attention to
keep it looking it’s best. Mowing, whipper snipping and watering, however, are just
the basics, and depending on the season, your lawn may need more attention to
keep it looking green and healthy.
Feeding your lawn throughout the year
The ideal time to fertilise your lawn is at the beginning of each season (except for winter). To prepare your lawn for its spring growth, apply a complete fertiliser high in nitrogen in September, applying the same fertiliser in early December. For the autumn season, apply a fertiliser high in potassium in March, which will help to maintain the health of your lawn during the colder months.

Aerating or dethatching your lawn
Dead growth (also known as thatch) can be good for your lawn, acting as a mulch, but too much and it prevents light, air, nutrients and moisture reaching the roots. The result is a brown and dead looking lawn.  

To remove this thatch you can either aerate your lawn or dethatch it, both of which can be labour intensive, but are definitely worth the time and energy involved. The best time of the year to aerate or dethatch your lawn is during early spring, so that it is ready for its new growth.

Spring tasks for your lawn
To help the new growth gain traction in spring, rake away all the dead growth as this lets light reach the new shoots (if there is an overabundance of thatch then your lawn will need to be aerated or dethatched, as above). Fertilise your lawn, don’t over water it, and sprinkle lawn seeds over any dead patches.

Summer tasks for your lawn
Apply your summer fertiliser and water early in the mornings, before the day is too hot. Morning is better than evening for watering, as during the evening the overnight humidity can lead to fungal growth in your lawn. Leave your lawn to grow higher in summer, as this protects the roots from the heat of the day and reduces evaporation.

Autumn tasks for your lawn
Fertilising your lawn is important in autumn, as it strengthens the grass and helps it to withstand the cold winter temperatures. Lawns can dry out quickly in autumn, due more to the windy weather than the heat of summer, so don’t forget to water your lawn regularly.

Winter tasks for your lawn
​Apart from regular mowing and whipper snipping, all you really need to do in winter is keep up the watering, making sure not to over water as this can kill your lawn during winter.

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Little Taccas is held fortnightly on Thursdays from 10am to noon. Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.
